BetterHelp restricts insurance users to video sessions
What changed
- BetterHelp now requires insurance-using members to use live video sessions only.
- Self-pay members are now limited to 3 session types (video, phone, chat) instead of the previous 4 options.
- Removed "exchanging messages" from the primary list of therapy session types.
- Updated live counters for therapist and user counts (likely rendering noise, but occurred alongside content edits).
Why it matters
BetterHelp is tightening rules for how patients use their service. By forcing insurance users into video-only sessions, they may be trying to meet stricter medical billing requirements or improve patient outcomes through higher-engagement formats.
